A new extra-curricular programme has recently been launched at the Klabb 3-16 centres of Zabbar B and Mosta, thanks the support of 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐚 𝐩𝐥𝐜. Based on the concept of 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, the programme teaches the life-skill of sewing, and was devised by two teachers of the VET subject Fashion and Textiles, 𝐌𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐢𝐚 and 𝐌𝐬 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐚 𝐕𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚.

The programme is giving the students the occasion to use resources associated with the art of sewing, such as sewing machines, fabric shears, rotary cutters, measuring tapes, tailors’ chalk, and different fabrics with different textures. However, it is also an opportunity for them to develop their creative skills, help build confidence, and instill a sense of pride in their finished creations.

They are also being encouraged to solve problems, think logically, and get an insight into design, as they learn about measurements, placement, and function.

Another learning outcome of the programme is that the students are learning more about sustainable fashion, and the impact of textile production on the environment. The fabric pieces being used are offcuts which rather than going to waste, are being used to teach the students about upcycling and repurposing old fabric into something new.

A special thanks to BIBAS, Big Ben Interiors, and B4 Textiles, for providing the materials for this programme.

The drama sessions held during the Klabb 3-16 service have been of great benefit for all the children who took part. Organised thanks to the support of the 𝐇𝐒𝐁𝐂 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐤, these sessions were delivered in 5 centres between October 2023 and March 2024. In all, FES reached 120 students whose ages ranged between 3 years and 6 years.

The sessions were held at the Klabb 3-16 centres of Luqa, Qormi SB, Fgura, Zurrieq, and Haz Zabbar A. The sessions ended with a short demo where the students showed off the moves and tricks learnt during their time with their tutor.

The demo at Haz Zabbar A was attended by parents and relatives, and also by the Minister for Education 𝐃𝐫 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚, the Executive Director & Head of Business Development at HSBC 𝐌𝐫 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚, the CSR Manager for HSBC 𝐌𝐫 𝐆𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐠𝐞𝐣𝐚, the FES CEO 𝐌𝐫 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧, and the Head of School 𝐌𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐨.

The event was not only an opportunity for the children to perform, but also for plenty of parental interaction as the children ran to their parents and relatives to get them to move and sway with them. Members of the audience also had the opportunity to voice their opinion about the service, and shared the benefits that they witnessed in their children from the drama sessions.

Minister Dr Clifton Grima and FES CEO Mr Michael Bondin thanked HSBC Bank, for manifesting its corporate responsibility through the continued support of educational initiatives. The opportunities along the years have provided tools to build and strengthen the skills required by children to grow into independent citizens.

The sessions were delivered by the tutor from Centrestage Malta, 𝐌𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐚, who was assisted by the Centre Coordinator 𝐌𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐱𝐢𝐚𝐤 and the Playworkers 𝐌𝐬 𝐀𝐦𝐲 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐠 and 𝐌𝐬 𝐊𝐲𝐫𝐚 𝐀𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐚.

Well done and Thankyou to all!
