8th Invitational Institute

Selection procedure

  • Applicants are to fill in the form provided and hand it in to the address indicated on the form, by not later than Wednesday 4th February 2008 at noon.
  • A copy of the form is available from all schools and from the Foundation for Educational Services (FES).
  • Teachers and instructors in state and non-state primary and secondary schools may apply. All applications need to be endorsed by the Head of School. Other applications may be accepted with the approval of the Director of Curriculum Management and eLearning in agreement with the FES.
  • Applicants need to be fluent in Maltese and English.
  • Selection will be made by the Malta Writing Programme (MWP) and the Education Division on the basis of replies in the submitted forms and, if necessary, on an interview.
  • Priority will be given to experienced teachers of exemplary practices, who could be very good disseminators in the school community. Teachers with less than two years’ teaching experience will normally not be accepted.
  • All applicants will be notified whether they have been selected or not by mid-February 2009.

 

Institute Modalities

  • The 8th Invitational Writing Institute (8th IWI) is being organised by the MWP within the FES. The 8th IWI is being organised with the support of the Education Directorates.
  • The 8th IWI will be held at the National Curriculum Centre (NCC) in Hamrun.
  • Selected applicants will be required to attend a preliminary evening meeting. More details will be sent later on. Selected applicants who do not attend this meeting will not be able to participate in the Writing Institute, and will be replaced by other applicants.
  • The 8th IWI shall run as follows:

Week 1: 2nd – 6th March 2009              Full 5-day participation
Week 2: 9th – 13th March 2009            Full 5-day participation
Week 3: 16th – 20th March 2009          Full 4-day participation (19th March – Public Holiday)
Week 4: 23rd – 27th March 2009          Full 5-day participation

All days start at 08:30 and end at 14:30

    • Participants will be required to do some background reading before and during the Institutes, as directed by the MWP.
    • Participation in the 8th IWI is fully subsidized by the Director of Curriculum Management and eLearning within the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education and the Foundation for Educational Services. Participants will be provided with the relevant reading material and resources and will be able to make use of a specialised lending library.
    • Participants who, for whatever reason, do not attend all sessions of the 8th IWI will receive confirmation of their attendance but will not be eligible for the Certificate of Attendance.
    • The 8th IWI will end with a graduation for Institute participants and administrators of their respective schools. The highlight of the graduation will be a reading of selected writings by the participants themselves.
    • Successful 8th IWI participants will receive certification from MWP. They will be able to :
    • apply Writing Institute methodology in their classrooms;
    • pass on their knowledge and skills to their fellow teachers in their schools;
    • keep reading material and resources distributed as part of the Writing Institute;
    • have privileged access to writing process resources and on-going technical support;
    • participate voluntarily in the Writing Teacher Leaders’ Forum and other teacher support activities. Regular afternoon or evening meetings will be held throughout the year.
    • Successful 8th IWI participants will be expected to:
    • apply Writing Institute methodology in their classrooms;
    • pass on their knowledge and skills to their fellow teachers in their schools and will be able to call on the Institute Secretariat for assistance in this respect;
    • participate in one follow-up session organised by the MWP in November 2009.
    • In addition, they will be encouraged to facilitate follow-up data collection by the MWP.
